So I take my break to go get a cup of tea, and in the store there is one gentleman in front of me. I sample some free tea and when I turn back I see a lady who is unsure if I was in line or not. Being the nice guy I an, I motion for her to go ahead of me.

Big mistake. Without a hint of gratitude she steps to the counter and begins berating the young man at the counter for incorrectly charging her on an earlier transaction. He is alone and new here, but he keeps his poise. He politely apologizes for the error and begins to scan the receipt to correct her problem. At this point I’m more disappointed in her. She knew this would take a few minutes to correct, she could have said something. I was the only other customer in the store. The employee gets on the phone for help, apparently issuing a refund is a complicated process!

I’m about to leave, having waited ten full minutes just for a cup of hot water. The young man finally got it sorted and hands her her change with another apology.

Without a word the woman snatches up her money and walks out.

It’s disappointing to see that people can’t behave themselves in a more civilized fashion. Everyone make mistakes, but when they apologize and make a genuine effort to make things right you can at least accept their apology with a little class.

Now and then we’re in a hand and someone makes a strange play at an unexpected moment. The following hand I recently played in the Sunday Storm at Stars. I have two tournaments going, at the first I’m doing well, just having had a hot rush of cards and action. In this one I’ve taken a bit of a blow and am below my starting stack, but certainly not in critical condition yet. I look down at AQ in the big blind..

Poker Stars $10+$1 No Limit Hold’em Tournament – t40/t80 Blinds – 9 players

Rewindkid (BB): t3744 46.80 BBs

Pre Flop: (t120) Rewindkid is BB with A Q

I like my hand. Being in the big blind means I tend to lean to more conservative play, particularly when a player who hasn’t done much is the initial raiser.

3 folds, QuietGuy raises to t200, MP2 calls t200, 3 folds, Rewindkid calls t120

Flop: (t640) 3 K T (3 players)

Swing and a miss! A gutshot and backdoor flush draws hold some interest, but I’m not in love with the board. The flop hits his range easily. My position against two players keeps me from betting out.

Rewindkid checks, QuietGuy bets t352, MP2 folds, Rewindkid calls t352

This bet is expected. I’d like to see the turn, there are a lot of cards that can improve my hands potential and I might be able to steal it if I sense anything. I will be wary of an Ace though; it could lead to bigger losses.

Turn: (t1344) 6 (2 players)

A blank turn – I’m not sure how to feel about it.

Rewindkid checks, QuietGuy checks

He checked? Very interesting. Now I’m certain he didn’t like the flop either. Too bad I’m out of position or I could’ve taken it right here. (In retrospect, I really should have bet into him here regardless.) At best he has middle pair, or top pair with kicker issues. I don’t think he even has that much. I’m prepared to fire at the river.

River: (t1344) Q (2 players)

What a great card! If I’m right and he doesn’t have a King, I just outdrew any smaller pair he could have. I’m pretty sure my pair of Queens is the winner, and I want to extract value.

Rewindkid bets t686, QuietGuy raises to t2160 (instantly)

Whoah!! What the hell just happened? I bet for value into a guy who’s clearly weak, and he raises me enough to commit my stack in about 1/5th of a second? Was he waiting for me to bet the whole time? Seems unlikely. With two pair or a set he would still be expected to make another bet on the turn, the board is dangerous and he gets value from a lone pair. I go into the tank.

If he raises preflop with two clubs, say K-J, the river flushes him. I’m finding it hard to believe given his play so far. He hasn’t taken any beats, there is no psychological reason for an insane play that I can see. All I can surmise is that perhaps he raised pre-flop with A-J and made a standard continuation bet on the flop, and when I called he shut it down. The turn was a blank and I let him see the river for free, allowing him to make the nuts. It seems to make sense. At best he has AQ and we chop, but I doubt he reraises the river with that – he’d just call.

Rewindkid folds

After coming up with no excuse to make a big call, I muck my second pair. He didn’t show, so I’ll never know for sure. Those are the ones that bug you..

So I fiddled with my blog layout a bit over the last two months, only to realize the first design was still the best. I can usually tell if a redesign or refocus is a bad idea – I’ll blog a bunch in a two week period, then not touch it for about a month. And as my last update was precisely a month ago, I’d say that’s a pretty good sign that it was change for the sake of change. So, my old theme returns. I’ll just update the banner image later. How about a new name – The Poker Monk sounds kinda cool. A little egotistical maybe, but let’s face it, it’s a vanity blog anyway. It’s not entirely inaccurate is it? I play cards and derive wisdom from the game I love, I’m generally an easy-going dude.. yeh, Monk doesn’t sound too bad.

I haven’t made a single New Years resolution since 1999. In my humble opinion there’s no point in waiting for a specific calendar day to decide to better one’s self. If someone wants to lose weight, be more charitable or quit smoking, why would January 1 change their drive to do so? My friends, the difference between December 30 and January 2nd is just a couple days and nothing more.

Don’t misunderstand me, I have no doubt you are serious in your convictions. I only ask, why on this day? Attaching false significance to the date doesn’t help you, it just adds unnecessary pressure to what’s already going to be a challenge. It also reminds us of our failures from last year, starting us off on the wrong foot. And if you tell me you didn’t fail then that’s awesome, and I imagine you see by now that the adjustment to your lifestyle needed no start date. Cancer, heat disease and the like could care less that it’s 2012.

If you want to take a few minutes to evaluate yourself that’s good, but we should be doing this daily. Short term willingness to try to do something, no master how strong and convincing your will is, is not the same as actually doing it. I have faith that you can achieve your goals because you have it within you to do so. Not because you’ve declared you will on a magical date that means you’re super-serious this time. I suggest that every day this year, when you wake up, renew your resolve, and act.
